1.2: What Do Cryptos Physically Exist As?

The easy way to approach this question is to ask a slightly different one — what does the money in your bank account exist as?

Even in the 1970s we were laughing about the idea that your money would be physically stored by your bank. Even back then, your money was no longer stored as a written entry into a big old dusty book, but as a string of 0s and 1s in a binary representation of your wealth on a computer.

The computers have got bigger. Our ability to communicate with them, and their ability to communicate with each other, has changed exponentially year on year. But at the end of the day, cryptos are no more than an entry into a distributed ledger — an immutable one, and we will later understand the importance of that — supported by computers and their ability to communicate.

Get rid of electricity, and computers, and you have no cryptos. In exactly the same way that your money and your investments in the fiat world would also disappear without computers and the internet.
