1.12: MetaMask and Ledger Nano

Introduction

Module 1.11 described in detail how to set up MetaMask for use as an online web wallet, known as a "hot" wallet. All hot wallets suffer from a significant risk of being hacked by malicious actors, often using a form of phishing scam.

But there is a simple solution. It is possible to combine the security of Ledger Nano with the utility and ease of use of MetaMask. This module tells you how.

Connecting Ledger Nano

  1. Once MetaMask has been set up and you are logged in, click on the account dropdown menu at the top.
  2. Choose "+ Add account or hardware wallet".
  3. On the next screen click "Ledger" — you will be invited to plug in your Ledger Nano and open the Ethereum app.
  4. Click continue and connect.
  5. You will be prompted to open Ledger Live, the desktop application used to manage the firmware and apps for Ledger Nano.
  6. Approve the bridging process, select the appropriate account, and you are in.

All transactions using this public address in MetaMask need to be approved first on your Ledger Nano — nothing can happen without your express permission.
